The design for this home focused on retaining as much of the dense native bush as possible on this steep, secluded site near Muriwai Beach on Auckland’s West Coast. By mapping the important native trees, a building platform location was chosen that would maximise the available light and provide views into the bush.

The curving roof forms came about as the client was able to access ‘barn-style’ roofing at reduced cost and Stephen Matthews Architects explored how this element of the brief could be used to create a unique design. The bespoke timber joinery offers the project a sense of softness and warmth and provides a point of contrast to the otherwise ‘industrial’ corrugated cladding material.
